​If you have then you will be interested in joining with Elaine and other teachers  for a get-together to review and discuss ways to manage Literature Circles.  Everyone who has taken Elaine's literature circle workshop over the years is welcome to attend.

The get-together will be held in the community room at VanCity Credit Union, 4302 Hastings Street, Burnaby (at the intersection of Madison Avenue).  The meeting will start at 10 am.

Engage with Indigenous knowledge keepers, educational leaders, and resources to enhance your understanding and knowledge of practices that advance reconciliation in the places where you live, learn, and work.
The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia will once again offer the Massive Open Online Course: Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education starting October 23rd.
        This free six week course supports professional and personal learning for advancing Indigenous priorities and reconciliation in community, education, and work contexts. It runs asynchronously, which means you view materials and engage in the course at your own pace. There are many exemplars from Canada, Australia, the US, and New Zealand.
                The course includes reports, innovations, and exemplars, as well as a range of multimodal materials. In addition, it brings attention to how all of us can strengthen our commitments to reconciliation through education and action in places where we live, learn, and work. If you had previously registered, the course is rich with resources that you may wish to revisit.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will help you envision how Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, and approaches to learning can be made part of the work we do in classrooms, organizations, communities, and our everyday experiences in ways that are thoughtful and respectful. In this course, reconciliation emphasizes changing institutional structures, practices, and policies, as well as personal and professional ideologies to create environments that are committed to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous peoples.
         For educators, this means responding to educational reforms that prioritize improved educational outcomes for Indigenous learners. In addition, educators must support all learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people’s worldviews and cultures as a basis for creating equitable and inclusive learning spaces. To support these goals, teachers, administrators, young people, school staff, and researchers will learn from Indigenous Elders, educational leaders, and culturally relevant learning resources as part of their experiences in this Massive Open Online Course.
             For others who want to build their own competence and the capacity of those around them to engage in relationships with Indigenous peoples based on intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect, this course will help get you started in this process.

Sponsored by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the annual British Columbia Teachers’ Institute on Parliamentary Democracy is an intensive four-day professional development opportunity for teachers of social studies and related subjects in elementary, middle and secondary school. Participating teachers return to their schools with an enhanced understanding of parliamentary democracy and political process in B.C.

The next session of the B.C. Teachers' Institute on Parliamentary Democracy will be held from October 16-20, 2018 in Victoria.
Applications are being accepted until June 29, 2018.
Thank you to the 30 teachers from across the province who participated in the October 2017 session of the B.C. Teachers' Institute on Parliamentary Democracy. During an intensive four days in Victoria, the teachers collaborated to produce six engaging new lesson plans on topics related to governance, parliamentary procedure and democracy. The Suitcase Project asked yonsei and gosei (fourth and fifth generation Japanese Canadian and Americans) what they would pack if uprooted from their homes at a moment's notice, like their ancestors had to during the internment in BC in the 1940s.  The BCTF strongly supports examining  historical wrongs during the intermediate grades through Social Studies.  This exhibit displays the impact of this unfortunate part of Canada's history on Japanese Canadians both then and now.
